Her aunt was a nurse who stayed overnight in order to give her an opportunity to study theatre or literature. DuVernay instantly became enthralled when she showed her the 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay learnt by doing the art of being a good instrument for activism. DuVernay had a mother who was socially conscious and taught her how to make use of the arts as a way to express herself. DuVernay was a resident of Compton throughout her life, but would spend every summer with her father's extended family located in Lowndes County Alabama. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summers and was later motivated to make a documentary on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied at the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English as well as African American study. While she was still studying, DuVernay became interested in producing for television journalism. DuVernay was an intern at CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to examine the garbage inside the house that belonged to a member of the jury. Due to her tasks she was dissatisfied with journalism, and shifted into the business of publicity. DuVernay got her first job as a publicist in an unassuming production studio straight after she graduated from school. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999.
